10 Ways to Raise a Street-Smart Child

1. Give Your Children Power

Let your children know they have the right to say “no” to adults when something feels wrong. Empowering kids builds confidence.

2. No Shortcuts

Teach children not to take shortcuts through alleys, vacant lots, or isolated paths where no one can witness or assist in case of danger.

3. Know Important Information

Children should memorize their full name, address, and phone number in case they get separated from a parent or guardian.

4. What to Do When Lost

If lost in a store, children should seek out employees or go to the customer service desk. In other public places, instruct them to look for someone in uniform, such as a police officer.

5. Trust Your Instincts

Encourage your children to trust their gut feelings. If they feel like they’re being followed or in danger, they should go to a crowded, safe place immediately.

6. Check It Out

Get to know your child’s teachers, babysitters, and coaches. Stay informed and involved in who your child spends time with.

7. Use a Code Word

Establish a family “code word” that must be known before your child talks to or goes anywhere with someone they don’t recognize.

8. Cherish Your Children

Children who feel loved, respected, and supported are less likely to become targets. Abductors often look for isolated or emotionally vulnerable children.

9. No Personalized Clothing

Avoid clothing or backpacks with your child’s name printed on them. Strangers may use this to falsely appear familiar and gain your child’s trust.

10. Good Touch / Bad Touch

Teach your child to understand the difference between appropriate and inappropriate physical contact. Clearly explain which body parts are private and what to do if someone crosses that boundary.
